During her appearance on the podcast “Changing the Ovarian Cancer Story”, the international journalist spoke openly about the cancer’s return alongside her doctor, Dr. Angela George, a gynecologic oncologist who accompanied her throughout the entire treatment.
“I have it again, but it’s very well under control,” Amanpour said. “And that’s one of the things people need to understand about certain types of cancer.”
“Obviously, all the relevant organs were removed, but the problem has reappeared a few times in a lymph node,” she explained to host Hannah Vaughan Jones.
According to Dr. George, Clinical Director of Genomics at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, Amanpour has a rare type of ovarian cancer that represents less than 10% of all cases.
The 67-year-old journalist said that her cancer was detected a second time and now, thanks to the routine checkups she undergoes every three months, she was moved when talking about the support she received from family and friends.
“I had never asked for help before. And when I did, I received it,” she said, her voice breaking. “From my family, my friends, my colleagues, from everyone. And it was truly, well, it was touching, but it was also really helpful, really incredible.”
“It really kept me going, because it’s not just about the illness, it’s about the mindset,” Amanpour explained. “And having all these people who literally asked me every day how I was doing, how they could help… the community is truly vital, and I’m very lucky to have had that.”
