Jimmy Karz, the actor who played Bruce Bogtrotter in Matilda, decided to leave Hollywood behind and pursue a completely different career.
Bruce is a character who gained significant attention because of the scene in which he eats a huge chocolate cake all by himself in front of the students at Crunchem Hall Primary School as a punishment devised by Miss Trunchbull, the school’s headmistress.
Karz was only 12 years old when he played the role in the 1996 film, marking his first appearance in cinema. Two years later, he joined the cast of The Wedding Singer, starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, and later portrayed Alfred Clark in the long-running medical drama ER.
Despite his promising start as a child actor, Karz soon chose to step away from the spotlight to focus on his studies. In 2017, he graduated as a doctor from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, according to the tabloid The Sun.
He previously shared that he was drawn to osteopathic medicine after working as a production associate at MTV News. “I realized I wanted to do more service-oriented work,” he said in a 2015 interview with the American Osteopathic Association publication, The Do.

“I really enjoyed community gardening at the time and started volunteering to teach people from low-income communities how to grow their own food. Through gardening, I learned a bit about biology and chemistry—enough to realize I wanted to dive deeper into science.”
“I went back to school to study biochemistry, which led me to medicine. I liked the focus of osteopathic medicine on treating the whole patient, and I was interested in learning hands-on techniques to help patients,” Karz added.
