Malinger, now 42 years old, was only 8 when he played Jonah, the matchmaking son of Sam (Hanks), in Nora Ephron’s film. In a recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly, he recalled some moments with Hanks behind the scenes.
“We were filming at the fish market, waiting to start shooting, and Tom kept picking up different fish, moving their mouths and making them say funny things,” Malinger said.
“He was always joking around and making me laugh,” he remembered, adding that the friendship they built during filming continued even after the cameras stopped rolling.
“We really cared about each other. That natural chemistry allowed me to bring a lot of intensity and emotion to the character of Jonah.”
Malinger continued acting for many years and appeared in more than 20 films and series after Sleepless, including the sitcom Good Advice and the comedy Nick Freno: Licensed Teacher, but decided to retire from acting in 2006.
After stepping away from acting, he worked as a restorer of classic cars before starting a small IT and computer repair business. Today, he works as a financial manager at a car dealership.
Still, he fondly remembers his most important role. “After filming our argument scene, Nora told me she knew this would be a very special movie. Tom and I worked together in harmony, and in the end, that’s what, in my opinion, made this film a classic.”
