New behind-the-scenes videos from Netflix’s hit miniseries “Adolescence” show how the team managed to shoot four one-hour episodes in a single take.

Netflix has released a series of behind-the-scenes videos of “Adolescence” on its platform, the new miniseries whose four one-hour episodes were filmed in a single unbroken shot.

Starring Stephen Graham, the series was directed by Phillip Barantini, who had previously worked with the actor on a 90-minute feature film, also shot in a single continuous take.

This technique involves filming scenes in such a way that the viewer experiences everything continuously and without interruptions.

Graham spoke about the filming at the Next on Netflix event. “We spent an entire week rehearsing as actors with Phil, going through every moment, piece by piece,” he said.

Matthew Lewis, director of photography for “Adolescence,” said it took him “a few weeks” to process the fact that “there were no cuts, and what was filmed would be the episode.”

The series tells the story of Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old boy detained as a suspect in the murder of a schoolmate. Behind-the-scenes footage shows that the first episode, which depicts Miller’s arrest, was filmed on the second attempt.

The videos show the film crew moving cameras from tracks to cars and then handing them over to operators, who switch equipment as the scene unfolds.

“Adolescence” premiered on March 13 and achieved a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, remaining in the top 10 most-watched Netflix series.
