“Please keep Carrie in your thoughts and prayers,” wrote her mother, Patricia Lee, in a post shared on Carrie’s Instagram on January 1st, alongside photos of her injuries.
“She is in a lot of pain but is healing. She was involved in a traumatic incident in New York, where a man trying to escape the police hit several cars before crashing into a food cart and running over Carrie.”
Patricia said that Carrie had multiple broken bones, fractures, chipped teeth, and recently underwent surgery. However, the mother of the 29-year-old “thanked God she is alive”.
After the incident, Carrie’s family kept fans updated on her condition, with her mother sharing information on Instagram Stories
A spokesperson for the New York Police Department told E! News that in the early hours of New Year’s Day, a 44-year-old man had been involved in a dispute with a 34-year-old woman inside a black Mercedes sedan and fled when police tried to approach the attacker.
“The man did not obey police orders and fled towards 33rd Street before making a right turn onto 7th Avenue against the flow of traffic, the Mercedes then turned onto West 34th Street, where it drove onto the sidewalk and began heading west.”
The spokesperson continued: “The man then hit a food cart and struck two 39-year-old pedestrians, a 31-year-old pedestrian, and a 29-year-old pedestrian (Carrie Bernans). All four were transported to NYC Health and Hospitals/Bellevue in stable condition.”
But they were not the only ones hit by the fleeing vehicle.
“The Mercedes then continued on West 34th Street, where it again drove onto the sidewalk after passing 8th Avenue and hit two police officers.” The Mercedes then hit two parked vehicles before colliding with a 2022 Toyota Camry on the road.
“The police officers were then able to apprehend the perpetrator and place him under custody,” added the spokesperson. “The officers were transported to a local hospital in stable condition. The 34-year-old passenger of the Mercedes was taken to NYC Health and Hospitals/Bellevue in stable condition. The investigation is ongoing.”
