“We all wore these cards hanging around our necks with the lines, so he could just act instead of constantly saying: ‘What do I say now?’” D’Angelo recalled.
Quaid told the event audience that Chase struggled to remember his lines during an intense dialogue scene in “Christmas Vacation,” the Christmas sequel to “National Lampoon’s.”
“When Clark has his meltdown, that was a tough scene because [Chevy] had to remember all those lines,” the actor recalled. “It was simply impossible for him, because his brain doesn’t work that way,” he explained.
“Chevy is a comedian, he’s a live performer. That’s how he survives,” said D’Angelo, who explained that the method used to get her colleague to film the scene was different from that of a conventional actor.

“Everyone had my lines in front of them. So I just went from one swear word I had written to another swear word I had written, and that went on for a while,” said Chevy Chase.
In “Christmas Vacation,” Chase’s character Clark has a breakdown after thinking he had received a Christmas bonus check from his boss, but in the end, it turned out to be just a subscription to a monthly jelly club.
“Christmas Vacation” is the third film in the franchise, which concluded in 1997 with “Vegas Vacation.” Chase and D’Angelo reprised their roles in a semi-reboot in 2015, titled “Vacation.”
