The Barbie Dream Fest, an event about the doll that took place last weekend in Fort Lauderdale, Florida (USA), was heavily criticized online for its lack of attractions.

The event, which took place over three days at the Broward County Convention Center, was initially marketed as an immersive celebration of the iconic doll, complete with themed installations and interactive experiences.

However, photos and videos shared from inside the event show large portions of the venue completely empty, while small booths and themed decorations were sparsely scattered around the hall.

“I found out about the event through my sister. She saw the [ad] and social media posts and invited me to go,” said Alexandria Dougan, who attended the event, in an interview with People magazine.

“It was an early birthday gift for my niece. We paid $70 per adult, $30 per child for the tickets, and $20 for parking. $190 in total.”

After spending nearly $200 to attend the event, Dougan’s expectations were very high. Unfortunately, they were not met.

When she entered the center, the first things she saw were “the 80s roller skating rink and the bike event. The rink had metal bars and a small disco ball. No music, no theme,” she says.

“The Barbie Dream House was a cut-out cardboard box with a pink blanket in front, some chairs, and a VW bus that you couldn’t even get into.”

According to Dougan, the scale of the event made everything even more disappointing. “The space was huge, and it wasn’t filled. So much empty space. It was really heartbreaking to waste our hard-earned money and the time we had set aside to spend with family.”

Dougan and her family stayed at the event for about an hour before deciding to leave. “As we were leaving, we asked who was in charge, but we couldn’t find them, so we sent an email instead,” she said.

Later, she said they received notice that refunds would be issued to all attendees. Even so, the whole situation left her disappointed. “We were really looking forward to this event. The marketing was good, it was a reputable brand, and they had very well-known special guests.”

After the criticism, Mischief Management, the event’s organizer, released a statement shared by Entertainment Weekly saying that the Barbie Dream Fest was “created as an intimate fan convention designed to foster meaningful connection, inspiration, and closer access to Barbie and her world.”

In the statement, they also said they were “incredibly grateful” to everyone who attended the event and reinforced their commitment to refunding attendees the full amount paid for tickets.

Mattel also addressed the controversy, stating that “the Barbie Dream Fest was created by Mischief Management, which licensed the Barbie brand from Mattel. We are working with Mischief Management, which is managing attendee feedback and issuing full refunds to all who purchased tickets. We want all fan experiences to be excellent.”
