Gary Sinise, an actor known for iconic roles in films such as Forrest Gump and Apollo 13, opened up about his decision to step away from Hollywood in 2019 to care for his son Mac, who was diagnosed with bone cancer.

In an interview with People magazine, published on May 14, Sinise spoke candidly about the challenges his family faced and the pain of losing his son in 2024 at the age of 33.
“I want people to know who he was”
Mac’s diagnosis came shortly after Sinise’s wife, Moira, was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer — something the actor described as “a double blow.” While Moira recovered following chemotherapy, Mac did not survive the illness.
“That’s when I stopped acting,” Sinise revealed. “I started putting everything I had into trying to find a miracle for Mac.”
The actor admitted the experience was devastating: “I thought about cancer all the time. You’re trying to ease the pain. Sometimes I felt like I wasn’t doing enough or didn’t know what to do.”

Faith and family unity
A practicing Catholic, Sinise emphasized how much he leaned on his faith throughout the process. “Hope keeps you in the fight,” he said. “You could see tumors on his body. You knew the drugs weren’t working. But I wasn’t thinking we were going to lose him.”
After Mac’s death, Sinise shared that the family grew even closer and that he found comfort in preserving his son’s artistic legacy. Mac was a composer and musician.
Mac’s musical legacy
Sinise discovered unreleased compositions on Mac’s laptop and decided to compile them along with previously completed works, releasing two posthumous albums. His dream now is to have these works performed by a live orchestra. “I want people to hear his music. I want people to share it. I’m on a mission,” he declared.
Focus on family
When asked about returning to film, Sinise said he’s in no rush. “Something may come along and it’ll work out, but it’s harder to leave home now. I just want to be near my family. Since losing Mac, I hold my daughters much tighter. You think about the things that truly matter.”
