Donald Trump promised the death penalty for those responsible if Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, is not returned alive and unharmed.
In a brief conversation with The New York Post, Trump said that the suspects who kidnapped Nancy, Savannah Guthrie’s mother, journalist and host of the Today show on NBC News, would face “extremely severe” federal consequences if the 84-year-old woman is found dead.
This statement comes as the search for Savannah’s mother enters its third week. When asked if the Department of Justice would seek the death penalty, the head of state confirmed, “That is true.”
Trump had already commented on Nancy’s disappearance shortly after she was reported missing on February 1. “I spoke with Savannah Guthrie and informed her that I am ordering all federal and local security forces to be immediately available to the family,” he wrote on his social media Truth Social on February 4.
“We are mobilizing all resources to bring her mother home safely. The prayers of our nation are with her and her family. May God bless and protect Nancy!” Trump added in the post.
According to Page Six, Nancy was last seen around 9:48 p.m. on January 31, after dinner and playing with her daughter, Annie, and her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni.
The Pima County sheriff, Chris Nanos, who is leading the investigation, confirmed that investigators still consider Nancy’s disappearance a kidnapping and not a failed robbery.
Nanos, however, acknowledged that authorities have not yet been able to determine a clear motive. “The motive is where we’re stuck, right? Is it for money? I mean, they only asked for money. But is it really about money, or is it revenge?”
