“Well, I’ve always been someone more interested in the scars and the life that people carry,” commented the star of “Couture,” adding that she is not drawn to the idea of a “perfect life.”
“So no, I think: hey, you know, I see my scars as a choice I made to do what I could to remain here as long as possible with my children,” she explained.
Angelina Jolie had the surgery to reduce the risk of cancer after doctors said she carried the BRCA1 gene. The actress’s mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died at the age of 56 in 2007 as a result of the disease.
“I love my scars because of that, you know, and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to make the choice to do something proactive about my health. I lost my mother when I was young and I’m raising my children without a grandmother.”

“And if you reach the end of your life and you didn’t do [something big, you know], didn’t make mistakes, didn’t mess anything up, don’t have any scars, then you didn’t live a full enough life, I think,” Angelina Jolie concluded.
In March 2015, Jolie said she also had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed as a preventive measure against developing ovarian cancer.
Angelina Jolie’s next film, “Couture,” tells the story of a filmmaker who is going through a divorce and is diagnosed with cancer.
The film initially premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025.
