Comedian Bill Maher explained the reason to his guest Patton Oswalt on his podcast Club Random. Maher said he wanted more safety during times of political polarization.

“I feel it was a great choice because I don’t want to be out there in this country, in this political atmosphere,” he told Oswalt.

Bill Maher went on to say that he could be “shot by the left or the right. I mean, it’s a good time not to be out there.”

The comedian recalled his 13th HBO special, “Bill Maher: Is Anyone Else Seeing This?”, which premiered earlier this year. He says this made his work improve with each edition.

“I felt that they basically got better over time, and I feel the last one was the best, which is a good way to stop,” he noted.

Beyond political issues, Maher said that traveling for his stand-up shows exhausted him greatly.

He was also “tired of being twice as funny as people who were selling twice as many tickets as I was.”

“Not that I didn’t sell many tickets and, you know, perform in great theaters, but I didn’t sell out arenas, and some people did… who frankly aren’t that good,” Bill Maher said.
