During her appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast with Alex Cooper, the 32-year-old actress shared that she was never afraid of the Grinch because she knew it was Carrey under the makeup and prosthetics. However, since her interactions with him only happened during filming, Momsen had no idea what the actor looked like in real life.
“Jim Carrey is the Grinch,” she said about how she thought at the time. “So, I didn’t know who Jim was until the premiere, and someone had to point him out and say, ‘That’s Jim,’ and I said, ‘Oh, Jim.’”

In the 2000 production, Momsen played the sweet little Cindy Lou Who, the girl who convinces the grumpy character played by Carrey to embrace the spirit of Christmas.
“People often ask me if he scared me, because I think a lot of kids were afraid of the Grinch,” the actress said. “He never scared me. To me, he was always Jim, and he was always in makeup.”
According to Momsen, Carrey always arrived early to have his makeup done, so she never saw what he looked like, but she said the actor was very kind and protective toward her.
“He was very protective of me,” she recalled. “He was very kind, super funny, full of energy, absolutely amazing,” she said.
Momsen, who retired from acting to focus on her music career, is also known for her role as Jenny Humphrey on the TV series “Gossip Girl” and as the lead singer of the rock band The Pretty Reckless.
