Tiel told People magazine that Elizabeth Taylor’s favorite husband was actor Richard Burton. The actress married and divorced him twice after they fell in love while filming “Cleopatra” (1963).
“Without a doubt. No doubt about it. The love of her life was Richard,” Tiel confirmed. She also recalled some advice her friend had given her for romantic situations.
“She also taught me a lot; if something bad happens, you just roll your eyes, smile, and don’t worry. She always laughed and was happy. She was a very, very happy person,” she said.
Although Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton didn’t stay together, their love lasted a lifetime. Burton died of a brain hemorrhage in 1984. Shortly before his death, he sent a note to Taylor and her then-husband Ron Berkeley.
“He said, ‘I don’t think I’ll live much longer, and I just wanted you and Ron to tell Elizabeth that I will always love her more than anything. I love her forever. I miss her and love her with all my heart,’” Tiel recalled.

Elizabeth Taylor was married to six other men besides Burton, to whom she was married from 1964 to 1974 and again from 1975 to 1976. She married hotel heir Conrad “Nicky” Hilton Jr. (1950–1951) and actor Michael Wilding (1952–1957).
After Wilding, she married producer Mike Todd (1957–1958), singer Eddie Fisher (1959–1964), politician John Warner (1976–1982), and construction worker Larry Fortensky (1991–1996).
