During the promotion of his memoir “We Did OK, Kid”, Anthony Hopkins spoke about the distant relationship he maintains with his only daughter.

In an interview with The New York Times, the 87-year-old actor revealed that his daughter Abigail, 57, whom he shares with his first wife Petronella Barker, has no interest in reconnecting with him.

Hopkins, who has previously admitted he was never a good father, said that his current wife tried to reach out, but his daughter didn’t even respond to the invitation for a visit.

“My wife, Stella, sent an invitation for her to come see us. Not a word in reply. So, I think: ‘Okay, fine. I wish her well, but I won’t waste blood over it,’” he said.

“If you want to waste your life holding onto resentment, that’s fine, go ahead. It’s not part of my understanding,” Hopkins continued. “I could hold resentment for the past, but that’s death. You’re not living. You have to recognize one thing: we are imperfect. We are not saints. We are all sinners and saints, or whatever we may be.”

“Life is painful. Sometimes people hurt each other. Sometimes we hurt ourselves. But you can’t live like that. You have to say: ‘Get over it.’ And if you can’t, fine, good luck. I hold no judgment. But I’ve done what I could. That’s it. That’s all I want to say.”

Abigail Hopkins, who in the 1990s appeared in the films “Shadowland” and “The Remains of the Day” alongside her father, told The Telegraph in a 2006 interview that she had little contact with Hopkins during her childhood.

“I saw him, but maybe once a year. I feel a bit of sadness, but I have to get on with my life. It was always like that. Seeing him, then not seeing him. Then, when I was 16, there was an argument,” she said.

“I love my father. He’s been very supportive. I wish him well. But I found a certain independence through my music. I need to give myself that time, to step out of the shadow,” she concluded.
In May of this year, she revealed that she had been diagnosed with stage-three bowel cancer in December 2020. She is now in remission and has completed a master’s degree in Film, as well as directed a documentary titled “Under the Sky” about her battle with the disease.

“We Did OK, Kid” will be released on November 4.
