The 52-year-old actor has spoken openly about his struggle with the neurodegenerative disease and will use his own experience with the condition for a guest appearance in the second season of NBC’s medical drama.
According to a press release, Dane will play Matthew, a firefighter who struggles to share his ALS diagnosis with his family and seeks help from Dr. Oliver Wolf, played by Zachary Quinto.
Dane, who revealed in April that he suffers from the condition, took to social media in September to talk about the urgency of finding a cure for the progressive neurodegenerative disease, shortly after missing the 77th Annual Emmy Awards, where he was scheduled to present one of the awards.
“For more than a century, ALS has been incurable, and we no longer accept the status quo. We need the fastest path to a cure,” the actor said in a video shared on Instagram at the time.

For the actor’s family, who share two daughters — Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13 — with his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, the disease has been a difficult battle.
According to Gayheart, they are facing it “one day at a time” and have received professional support to get through this challenging moment together. “It’s heartbreaking. My daughters are suffering a lot, and we’re trying to get through it. It’s a tough time,” she said in September.
“It’s a horrible disease, and I wish there was a cure. I hope they find one soon because it’s very sad,” she concluded.
