The *Mary Poppins* star revealed during the Vandy High Tea event that he and his wife, Arlene, tried to secretly visit Disneyland — but were discovered. Dick Van Dyke shared the story during a Q&A session.
Van Dyke said that he and his wife of 54 years were staying in the Dream Suite at Disney’s resort in Anaheim, California.
The legendary actor wanted to step out onto the balcony to get some fresh air. Arlene joined him to see how long it would take for someone to recognize who he was.
“I said, ‘Go outside and see if people notice.’ It was so cute. I was filming and said, ‘Wave to that person. Now wave to that person.’ He was so excited,” Arlene recalled, laughing.
Dick Van Dyke then decided to stroll through the park to explore a few rides. His wife pushed him in a wheelchair to make him less recognizable.
She added that the couple managed to enjoy six attractions, including his favorite: Radiator Springs Racers, from the movie Cars.
Van Dyke was eventually recognized by a little girl who adorably mispronounced his name as “Dip And Dyke.”
The Vandy High Tea is a charity event produced by Chris Isaacson Presents and hosted by Stu Shostak at the couple’s Malibu home, known as “Vandy Manor.”
