In a recent interview, director Woody Allen, who will turn 90 in November, revealed the plans he has already made for his death.
The revelation was made by the filmmaker during a conversation with Bill Maher, host of the Club Random podcast, as the two discussed the imminent collapse of the universe.
“I’m going to be gone long before the universe. I mean, I’m at the end… in December I’ll be 90 years old and I plan to die in the coming years,” Allen explained.
However, Maher raised the possibility that, with advances in artificial intelligence, technology might save him from death.
“Would you live forever if AI allowed it?” Maher asked, to which Allen replied: “What would they do? Insert a small mechanism in my head?” the director wondered.
“I don’t have the project, but AI is doing incredible things. It would simply reverse the deterioration of cell damage, which is what kills us. It’s not absurd that they could invent something that would literally make you immortal,” Maher added.
But Allen remained realistic, saying that he is already approaching 90 and that AI still has “nothing” ready in that sense. Maher took the opportunity to compliment his appearance despite his age.
“Well, yes, but that can change overnight. Suddenly you hit that number and I show up here with osteoporosis and trembling,” Allen said, adding that he believes he has been lucky when it comes to his health.
“My parents were very long-lived, so I’ve been blessed so far without that, but, you know, I’ve talked to people and said: ‘It’s extraordinary, you’re 95 years old and you look so good, so vigorous,’ and everything is great — and then suddenly they die.”
