Graham Greene, a Canadian First Nations actor, passed away on September 1 at the age of 73 after a long illness.
Greene, a member of the Oneida Nation, part of the Six Nations Reserve in southern Ontario, Canada, was a pioneering actor who opened the doors of Hollywood for young Indigenous actors.
In 1990, he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Kevin Costner’s “Dances with Wolves,” in which he played Kicking Bird.
“He was a great man of morals, ethics, and character, and he will be deeply missed,” said Michael Greene, the actor’s agent, to Deadline. “You are finally free.”
Greene was born in 1952 in Ohsweken, on the Six Nations Reserve. He worked as a sound engineer before casually beginning to act, after a friend convinced him to read a script.
The actor appeared in small Canadian and British productions during the 1970s before making his screen debut in 1979 in the Canadian drama “The Great Detective.” His first film role was in the 1983 movie “Running Brave.”
Throughout his career, Greene received several awards, including the Earle Grey Award for Lifetime Achievement, granted by the Canadian Academy of Cinema and Television in 2004. In 2016, the actor was invested into the Order of Canada, the country’s second-highest civilian honor.
