Less than two days after its release, James Gunn’s “Superman” had already grossed $217 million as of July 13.
The new film featuring the most iconic comic book character earned about \$122 million in the US and Canada alone, placing it at the top of the box office charts.
“Superman” represents a win for DC Studios and Warner Bros, as these companies have never before matched the box office success of Marvel films.
The movie was written and directed by James Gunn, who has been co-CEO of DC Studios since 2022. Gunn expressed gratitude for the positive reception of his new project.
“I am extremely thankful for the enthusiasm and kind words over the past few days,” he wrote on Threads over the weekend.

“We have had a lot of ‘Super’ in Superman over the years, and I’m glad to have made a film focusing on the ‘human’ side of this equation, a kind person always looking out for those in need,” he continued.
“The fact that this resonates so powerfully with so many people around the world is, in itself, a hopeful testament to the goodness and quality of humanity. Thank you,” he added, pleased.
David Corenswet plays the Man of Steel (and Clark Kent), alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Lex Luthor is portrayed by Nicholas Hoult.
The film premiered on July 11 and is available only in theaters.
