The new mafia film starring Robert De Niro features the actor playing two characters simultaneously. He spoke about the challenges of filming “The Alto Knights.”
Robert De Niro plays two lead roles in the mafia movie “The Alto Knights.” The story follows Frank Costello and Vito Genovese, two friends and rival mobsters. The actor discussed the challenge of taking on these two major roles.
In an interview on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” De Niro said it was an interesting experience.
“One day, Irwin Winkler said, ‘What do you think about the idea of Bob [Robert De Niro] playing both roles? Playing Frank and Vito?'” director Barry Levinson told the New York Post.
Levinson went on to say that the biggest challenge was making both characters act naturally.
He worked with the “Taxi Driver” star to adjust the dialogue so that the lines didn’t overlap. Then, he selected cast member Joe Bacino to play the character that De Niro wasn’t portraying in a given scene.

Robert De Niro only saw himself acting alongside himself in the film’s final cut. “I wasn’t sure how it would work, if it would work well or not. But I think it turned out well,” the actor said.
“The Alto Knights” premieres in theaters on March 21.
