Matthew Broderick has revealed a curious detail about the appearance of the protagonists of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and explained why he and Alan Ruck did not appear with the famous mullets that defined the 1980s.
In an interview with The Guardian, Broderick explained that the hairstyles of the characters Ferris Bueller and Cameron Frye ended up being the result of a coincidence.
When filming began in 1985, Broderick and Ruck had just performed in Neil Simon’s play Biloxi Blues, in which they portrayed soldiers and were required to keep their hair very short.
Because there was not enough time for their hair to grow before filming, both actors kept more understated haircuts for the movie.
Broderick said that if the actors had adopted the hairstyles that were more popular at the time, such as mullets, the film might have aged differently.

According to him, the simpler look helped keep the characters’ appearance current and contributed to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off continuing to be regarded as a classic.
In addition to the haircuts, the actor also said that Ferris’s wardrobe was designed to avoid trends that were too specific to the 1980s. The idea was to create a character with a more timeless style who appeared naturally confident rather than someone following a passing fashion trend.
“I thought Ferris shouldn’t be trying too hard, that things should come easily to him. I wanted to be a little cool and detached. We didn’t want him to be someone you wanted to punch in the face. That’s always the danger with guys who get away with everything,” Broderick explained.
Directed by John Hughes, the film follows Ferris Bueller, played by Broderick, as he skips school to spend a day having adventures around Chicago with his girlfriend Sloane and his best friend Cameron, played by Alan Ruck. The production became one of the decade’s most memorable teen comedies.
