Eddie Murphy will star in “Donkey,” a Shrek spin-off that will tell the origin story of the wisecracking, talkative character voiced by the comedian.
The iconic actor has voiced Donkey since the original animated film was released in 2001 and will return to the role in “Shrek 5,” which premieres on June 30, 2027.
“Donkey” is scheduled to hit theaters exactly one year later, and according to the official synopsis, the film will reveal “how a donkey became Donkey.”

The DreamWorks Animation film will be directed by Charlie Bean (The Lego Ninjago Movie), produced by Rebecca Huntley (Kung Fu Panda 4 and The Bad Guys), and co-directed by Matt Flynn (Puss in Boots: The Last Wish).
In “Shrek 5,” Murphy will be joined once again by Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz as Shrek and Fiona, while Zendaya, Marcello Hernandez, and Skyler Gisondo will play the ogre couple’s children.
