Mia Sara, who became internationally famous after starring in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” alongside Matthew Broderick, has spoken candidly about her experience making the film.
The 59-year-old actress, who played Sloane Peterson, the stylish girlfriend of the protagonist in the 1986 classic, revealed in a recent interview that working on the movie was far from an enjoyable experience.
The role in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” was only Sara’s second film job. At the time, she was just 17 years old, and in an interview with The Times, the actress admitted that she did not get along with director John Hughes.
“I don’t usually do interviews because making Ferris Bueller was not a very good experience for me,” she told the publication on June 20. “But I’m fully aware of how precious this film is to people, and I don’t want to disappoint them.”
“I didn’t get along with John. He wanted all of us to hang out together and be introduced to French New Wave films,” she continued. “But the others were experienced actors, and I was a snobby New York girl who had already seen all those movies, so he became frustrated.”

“I didn’t have the emotional maturity to deal with other people’s egos, or even my own,” the actress said while revealing that she was unhappy with her film career. “There are some things in my career that I’m very proud of,” she said, “but overall, it was not a happy career for me.”
The pressure of the entertainment industry and the exhausting audition process eventually pushed the actress away from Hollywood. After that, Sara focused on her personal life and her work as a writer and poet.
In 2024, after nearly 15 years away from acting, the actress returned at the invitation of director Mike Flanagan to play the protagonist’s grandmother in “The Life of Chuck”, a film based on Stephen King’s short story of the same name and starring Tom Hiddleston.
