Hugh Jackman underwent an impressive physical transformation to play the Prince of Thieves in “The Death of Robin Hood”, the new period drama from filmmaker Michael Sarnoski.
The film focuses on the hero’s final days, with the actor portraying an aging Robin Hood haunted and embittered by his brutal past, a very different version of the legendary British archer who has been depicted on screen countless times.
In “The Death of Robin Hood”, the 57-year-old Jackman appears almost unrecognizable, wearing a long gray-haired wig, a thick beard, and looking considerably older, with more pronounced facial wrinkles.
The actor told Entertainment Weekly that the character’s appearance was developed in collaboration with the costume department, hairstylist Sean Flanigan, and makeup artist Pamela Westmore, and that they quickly arrived at the look they were aiming for.

“We were sitting in the makeup trailer for Song Sung Blue when Sean showed a picture of a guy with slicked-back gray hair, and then he and Pam started working on something. We thought, ‘We need to create something that makes me look very different from anything I’ve done before, but also shakes up the image of Robin.’ And that look just felt right from the start,” he told the publication.
Despite portraying an older character, Hugh Jackman explains that his Robin Hood is still a strong man, and for that reason he also maintained his physical conditioning to bring authenticity to the role.
“I knew there was a lot of physical effort involved, so I stayed fit and followed my normal routine,” Jackman explained. “I wanted him to be a little leaner because we thought that would be the reality of a hermit.”
Alongside Jackman, the main cast includes Jodie Comer as Sister Brigi, Bill Skarsgård as Little John, Murray Bartlett as The Leper, and Noah Jupe as Arthur/Godwyn.
