U.S. Second Lady Usha Vance revealed that she told her husband, Vice President JD Vance, that church had been more effective for his mental health than therapy.
The comment emerged during the couple’s interview on CBS Sunday Morning and also appears in Vance’s new book, Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith, which recounts his journey back to Christianity and his conversion to Catholicism in 2019.
Asked about the statement, “Therapy didn’t work for you; church does,” Usha said she still believes that. However, she emphasized that she does not view therapy as ineffective in general, but rather that JD was unable to develop the level of trust needed for the therapeutic process. According to her, her husband did not feel comfortable exploring certain emotions and reflecting on who he wanted to become throughout his life.
During the interview, JD Vance agreed that religion had given him something he had been seeking for a long time: stability. The vice president said he grew up in a family environment marked by constant change and an unconventional structure, an experience he had previously described in his book Hillbilly Elegy. According to him, faith provided a sense of grounding and security that he could not find in other areas of his life.
The couple also discussed their religious dynamic. While JD is a practicing Catholic, Usha was raised in a Hindu family. Despite their differing beliefs, both said they maintain a harmonious relationship and that religion is not a source of conflict in their home.
Usha said that some of her husband’s previous remarks about wishing she shared his faith had been misunderstood. She added that he does not try to convert her every day or pressure her regarding her beliefs.
“I think that was misunderstood for the fundamental reason that he is Catholic. Part of his faith is wanting to spread his faith, but it’s not like he’s proselytizing to me every day.”
