The wife of Bruce Willis revealed the first sign that something was not right with the Hollywood star before he was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.
In a recent podcast interview, Emma Heming said she noticed a speech-related problem in Willis; according to her, the actor unexpectedly began stuttering again, an issue he had faced as a child.
“I was noticing things in his language, that… it was a stutter that had come back,” she explained to the host of The Bosstick.
Heming, who since Willis’ retirement in 2022 has spoken openly about the actor’s illness and the challenges she faces as his caregiver, revealed that in the case of the “Die Hard” star, language was the first sign, but that this is not the same for all patients with some type of dementia.

“The variant Bruce has affects language, but there is another that affects behavior and another that can affect movement. For others, it may be behavior, which can look like a midlife crisis or as if something has gone completely wrong,” she explained.
Bruce Willis stepped away from acting in 2022 after being diagnosed with aphasia, a disorder that affects a person’s ability to speak, write and understand language. In early 2023, his family announced that his condition had progressed to frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a rare and progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects behavior, language and decision-making.
