United States President Donald Trump said Chinese leader Xi Jinping showed admiration for the results of his administration during a meeting held in China last month.
The statement was made during an interview on the podcast Pod Force One, hosted by The New York Post columnist Miranda Devine.
According to Trump, Xi praised the speed with which the United States had recovered and strengthened. The American president said the Chinese leader told him he had never seen a transformation happen so quickly, adding that the U.S. had become the “most successful” country in the world.
Trump also said the meeting with Xi was positive and stressed that the Chinese president had great respect for his work. “He admires us,” the Republican said during the conversation.
The remarks echo comments previously made by Trump on his social media platform, where he argued that the United States had been seen as a nation in decline during Joe Biden’s administration, but was now experiencing a strong economic and political recovery.
“Two years ago, we were, in fact, a declining nation. On that, I fully agree with President Xi! But now, the United States is the hottest nation in the world, and we hope our relationship with China will be stronger and better than ever!” he wrote on Truth Social.
Asked about the legacy he would like to leave, Trump replied that he hopes to be remembered as the president who “took our country and made it great again.”
