The actor, who played bartender Sam Malone in NBC’s hit sitcom, revealed that he couldn’t believe women found him attractive.
Ted Danson, 78, who became known around the world for playing the womanizing bartender and former Boston Red Sox pitcher during the 11 seasons of “Cheers”, said that when he began filming the show, he was not prepared for the huge female interest his character generated.
In a conversation with actress Lisa Ann Walter on his podcast “Where Everybody Knows Your Name”, the actor was candid when his guest asked what happened when he realized he was attractive.
According to Danson, at the time he believed that women finding him attractive was simply a reflection of Sam Malone’s attitude, as the character was constantly surrounded by beauties on the series.
Danson said that, over time, he learned to accept compliments without arguing. “I inherited that mantle and eventually learned to keep my mouth shut,” he said.
Danson, who played Malone for more than 12 years, from 1982 to 1993, won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance on the show, which came to an end after 11 seasons when Danson decided to leave the series to pursue new opportunities.
