Leigh Whannell, producer and screenwriter of the first film in the “Saw” franchise, shared in an interview how he comes up with his ideas for the terrifying traps in the franchise’s films.

Whannell said that reading scripts and selecting the best ideas is not enough.

“I need to have an idea that will keep me interested for the next one or two years of my life. It’s a very difficult process. I might write down ten ideas in my notebook, but honestly, none of them might excite me,” he confessed.

He also talked about the bear trap used in the first film to capture the face of Shawnee Smith’s character, Amanda.

“That idea came while I was walking back and forth at home, and suddenly I imagined a person with something in their mouth, between their teeth. I don’t know where the idea came from, but now it belongs to the world. It’s surreal to think that it is now part of pop culture,” the filmmaker celebrated.

Whannell has written the “Insidious” franchise, directed the film “The Invisible Man,” and will release “Wolf Man” in January 2025.
