If you’ve never heard of it, the story of Action Park is truly interesting, to say the least, and the documentary released by HBO in 2020 showcases the horrors and joys of the water park combined with a motor park in New Jersey, USA.
Directed by Seth Porges and Chris Charles Scott, the film tells the story of the park opened in 1978, which was extremely popular, especially among teenagers, in the 1980s and 90s due to its absolutely wild attractions. To give you an idea, on the very first day, the park’s staff had to rescue about 100 people from the wave pool.
“Class Action Park” narrates its story through the ironic narration of John Hodgman, archival footage, and interviews with people who worked at the park, celebrities, and journalists. Much of the staff at the time were under 18, with 14-year-old children operating some of the attractions, which was against the law.
Over the 18 years the park was open, six people died and numerous others were injured. The documentary focuses on one of the most tragic stories that occurred there; the death of George Larsson Jr. The 19-year-old died after slipping on the Alpine Slide, losing control, and falling into a ravine.
Despite its bad reputation, or perhaps because of it, the park was a popular spot and always filled with visitors. “Class Action Park” seems to have pleased the audience as it boasts an impressive 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
