A French woman named Anne was scammed out of $856,000 after the scammer pretended to be actor Brad Pitt using AI-generated images. According to authorities, the criminal didn’t act alone.
According to a report from the French newspaper TF1, the scammers asked Anne for money to pay for a fake cancer treatment for Brad Pitt, 61. The victim was going through a tough time with her husband and said she trusted the person she was talking to.
Marwan Ouarab, the founder of the website “Find My Scammer,” shared that he found a group of 3 to 4 scammers using a trap link to identify the criminals, who are based in Nigeria.
“It wasn’t easy, I had to mobilize all my teams to find him quickly,” explained Marwan, who was able to track Anne’s money that was used by the scammers in cryptocurrency wallet applications.
“Today, he is still active, but now he is pretending to be Keanu Reeves. We don’t know if they will continue, but he has other options,” said Marwan.
Representatives for Brad Pitt said the incident serves as a reminder “not to respond to unsolicited online messages, especially from actors who are not present on social media.”
