Actor James Van Der Beek shared on his Instagram profile about his learning journey as he faces a battle with colorectal cancer.
The star of “Dawson’s Creek” shared in November 2024 that he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Days after turning 48, James Van Der Beek made an emotional statement about his treatment.
The actor, famous for starring in the series “Dawson’s Creek,” revealed in November his diagnosis of colorectal cancer.
“This has been the hardest year of my life. And I wanted to share something I’ve learned with you,” he said, after celebrating his birthday on March 8.
He recalled that over the years, he had identified himself with various qualities to define who he was as a person. “A supportive, kind, capable, strong husband, father, a steward of the land we are so fortunate to live on,” he shared.
“And then, this year, I had to look my own mortality in the eye. I had to face death head-on. And all those definitions I cared so much about were taken from me,” said James Van Der Beek.
“I was away for treatment. So, I could no longer be a helpful husband to my wife, I could no longer be a father, I couldn’t pick up my kids and put them to bed, and be there for them,” the actor lamented.
James has been married to Kimberly Van Der Beek since 2010, and together they have four children.
“What am I?” James Van Der Beek asked himself, reflecting, and that’s when the answer came to him. “I am worthy of God’s love. Simply because I exist,” he said.
The actor has held onto this mantra to stay strong during his healing process.
