As the trailer suggests, “Spaceman” is a journey through the mind of Jakub, the lonely astronaut portrayed by Adam Sandler. During his journey, he grapples with the vast loneliness of space and his tumultuous relationship with his wife, Lenka, played by Carey Mulligan.
After months of isolation, Jakub discovers that his life on Earth is falling apart and ultimately finds aid in a strange spider-like creature named Hanuš, voiced by Paul Dano, who joins him aboard the spacecraft and offers him emotional support.
The film, which premiered at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival on February 21 and shortly thereafter was released in a limited number of theaters, is expected to arrive on Netflix in early March. The film has been well-received by audiences, garnering a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Directed by Johan Renck (known for the award-winning miniseries “Chernobyl”) and written by Colby Day, “Spaceman” is based on the 2017 novel “Spaceman of Bohemia” by Czech author Jaroslav Kalfař.
According to the synopsis: “After six months on a solitary research mission at the edge of the solar system, astronaut Jakub (Adam Sandler) discovers that the marriage he left behind may not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth. In desperation to set things right with his wife Lenka (Carey Mulligan), he is aided by a mysterious creature he finds hidden in the bowels of his spacecraft. Hanuš (voiced by Paul Dano) works with Jakub to understand what went wrong before it’s too late.”
