In the new documentary “I Am: Celine Dion,” the 56-year-old singer reveals the tough battle she faces against Stiff-Person Syndrome, a condition affecting only one or two people per million, causing muscle stiffness, painful spasms, among other symptoms.

In December 2022, Dion shared her diagnosis with fans and in an Instagram video explained what she was going through: “Unfortunately, these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life, sometimes causing difficulty walking and preventing me from using my vocal cords to sing the way I’m used to.”

In the documentary, distressing scenes of the singer having a seizure during a physiotherapy session left viewers moved. In the footage, Dion is seen gasping, her bare feet completely stiff, enduring the painful episode, lasting 10 minutes.

On a massage table, the singer is shown convulsing and writhing in pain, groaning in agony, while doctors place her in a comfortable position, check her vital signs, and do everything possible to alleviate the uncontrollable spasms.

Speaking to Yahoo, the documentary’s director, Irene Taylor, revealed that after viewing the footage, Dion “didn’t want me to change anything.” “It was very disturbing. Very disturbing. I know it’s hard for some viewers, it was hard for me too. But I’ll tell you Céline felt validated by seeing herself like this, and she thought it would help if other people could understand what her illness is like.”

Dion is very candid in addressing her condition, and after the crisis passes, she speaks directly to the camera about how these episodes affect her not only physically but also mentally: “Every time something like this happens, you feel so ashamed and, like, I don’t know how to express it, it’s just… you know, not having control of yourself.”

“I still see myself dancing and singing. I always find Plan B and Plan C, you know. That’s me. If I can’t run, I’ll walk. If I can’t walk, I’ll crawl. But I won’t stop. I won’t stop,” says the singer.
