Billionaire Elon Musk was criticized for allowing misinformation about the series “Adolescence” to be shared on platform X.
Owner of X, formerly known as Twitter, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk was widely criticized on the platform for allowing users to share false information about the Netflix series “Adolescence”.
The production tells the story of a 13-year-old boy accused of stabbing a classmate. The plot is a critique of the risks of misogynistic online communities influencing young boys.
Elon Musk, however, reacted to a post that compared a real murder case with the plot of “Adolescence,” claiming that Netflix had changed the ethnicity of the criminal.
“Netflix has a series called ‘Adolescence’ about a British killer who stabbed a girl to death on a bus and was based on real cases like the Southport murder,” the user wrote.
“They changed the race of the real killer, who was a Black man/immigrant, to a white boy and turned the story into a narrative about him being radicalized online by the red pill movement,” the misinformation continued.
Although the series was inspired by real-life events, it was not based on the Southport case, in which the criminal, Axel Rudakubana, stabbed a girl to death on a bus.
Other users pointed out that “Adolescence” was filmed between March and September 2024 and could not have been inspired by the crime, which occurred in July of the same year.
Elon Musk, who has more than 220 million followers on the platform, was criticized for reacting to the post with “wow” and tagging Netflix’s profile in the fake news.
“The creators of the series made it clear that ‘Adolescence’ is not based on a single case. That tweet is a lie,” one user criticized.
The show’s creators, Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne, have previously stated that the series was inspired by multiple cases.
