The new documentary about Avicii premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York and traces the story of the DJ’s life, his rise to stardom until his tragic death. Directed by Henrik Burman, “Avicii: I’m Tim”, explores the artist’s childhood and the events that led him to commit suicide, in 2018, at the age of 28.

“Before Avicii, there was only Tim,” says the film’s synopsis. “For the first time, through his own words, witness the journey of a shy but prodigious musical talent who would soon become one of the most important artists of his generation.”

The documentary features behind-the-scenes footage, offers glimpses into his creative process and features appearances by some of Avicii’s most famous collaborators, including Nile Rogers and Coldplay’s Chris Martin. Family and friends also reflect on how becoming so famous before the age of 20 had an impact on his mental health.

Interviews with the DJ also reveal his struggle with alcohol, which helped him overcome his shyness when performing: ‘I noticed how stiff I became when I wasn’t drinking, so I discovered the magical cure of having a few drinks before starting, to relax.’ Part of the program shows Avicii saying he was “killing himself” with his relentless touring schedule. He performed more than 800 shows in just six years.

The damage caused by drinking to Avicii’s health took him to the hospital in January 2012, the DJ was suffering from pancreatitis, a condition caused by excessive alcohol consumption. At the time, doctors told him to stay sober for six months or his stomach wouldn’t heal. Writing in his diaries, Avicii said he had “difficulty accepting never to drink again” and admits he chose to listen only to doctors who told him to drink in moderation.

“I was much happier before I was famous than after I was famous. I began to feel very unhappy, he said; “I was on autopilot mode. I started to wonder why I was feeling this way.”

The documentary also shows his friend Jesse Waits, managing partner of the XS nightclub in Las Vegas, talking about how Avicii was doing before his death. “I realized he was taking painkillers. I grew up in a family that used drugs and I saw that when people took opiates, their eyes changed.”

“His eyes were wide open like a zombie’s, but he wasn’t there, the black part of his eyes looked like ‘pins’. This changed everything, these pills change the way you act and the way you feel. says Waits. “For him, it was to suppress anxiety, but it just created more anxiety.” For his friend, Avicii ‘lost himself’ amidst his success.

In the most impactful parts of the film, the DJ describes his struggles in detail and says he was “very anxious” all the time. “I could physically feel it.” ‘It was like a rock in my gut and it was constant, a constant emotion.’

Avicii sought help, but according to himself, nothing worked and his frustration with everything only increased: “It’s me trying to be something I’m not. The dream would be to be completely comfortable with what I already have and not have any aspirations to do a billion other things, not be constantly working… then I will be happy. I want to free myself from the ideas of living life. It stopped me from living a life… that would be life for me, to be content.”

Avicii was found dead in the city of Muscat, Oman, after allegedly cutting himself with a broken wine bottle. In the statement released by his family after his death, they said he ‘struggled with thoughts about the meaning of life and happiness’. “Tim wasn’t cut out for the machinery he ended up in, he was a sensitive guy who loved his fans but avoided the spotlight.”
