David Schwimmer revealed that he faced a tough decision in his career during the 90s when he got the chance to star in the movie “Men in Black” during a break from filming “Friends“.

However, the actor, who played Ross in the sitcom, also had the chance to direct his first film with his theater company, something he had always wanted to do. Despite the great opportunity the blockbuster offered, he chose to follow his directing ambition.

Schwimmer revealed in an interview on the podcast Origins With Cush Jumbo that he had already negotiated a deal with Miramax to act in three films, on the condition that he could direct his theater company’s first project.

His long-time friends in the industry even left their jobs to join the project, and the whole team was ready to start filming when the offer for “Men in Black” came. Since the shooting schedule conflicted with his own production, he had to make a choice.

“It was a brutal decision. […] You have to follow your heart and, look, I’m very aware, 20 years later or maybe more, that it would have made me a movie star. When you look at the success of that film and that franchise, my career would have taken a very different trajectory.”
