Dionne Marie Hanna, 84, the focus of the Netflix true crime documentary “Con Mum,” was arrested in Singapore after scamming her son, a former MasterChef contestant.
“Con Mum” is a Netflix true crime documentary that tells the story of how British woman Dionne Marie Hanna scammed multiple people, including her own son, Graham Hornigold, a former contestant on MasterChef.
Hanna contacted Hornigold during the pandemic in 2020, claiming to be his biological mother — something that was later confirmed to be true.
Hornigold, now a successful pastry chef, was born on a British army base in Germany and raised in St. Albans by his father and stepmother, who “never talked” about his mother.
He and his wife Heather traveled from London to Liverpool to meet Hanna for the first time. “We connected instantly, and I knew she was my mother,” the chef says in a clip from “Con Mum.”
According to the documentary, Hanna took money from people by promising to repay them with her supposed inheritance.
The 84-year-old woman told her son that her wealth came from land, farms, and businesses around the world — and claimed to be the illegitimate daughter of the Sultan of Brunei.
In “Con Mum,” Hornigold reveals that he and his friends paid for Hanna’s lavish lifestyle, leaving him with a debt of $382,250. His mother vanished one year after they met.
On Saturday (5th), Hanna appeared in court via video link after being charged with five counts of fraud, according to Singapore’s Channel NewsAsia.
If convicted, Hanna could face up to 20 years in prison and a hefty fine.
