A recent photo shared by David DeLuise on Instagram brought together the actors who play the Russo family, including DeLuise and Maria Canals Barrera, who will reprise their roles as Jerry and Theresa Russo.
The original series, aired on Disney Channel from 2007 to 2013, follows the adventures of the Russos, a family of wizards who keep their magical powers secret while trying to integrate into the mortal world. Now, almost a decade after the end of the successful series, Disney has greenlit a sequel starring David Henrie and Selena Gomez, who will return as Justin and Alex, respectively.
The newly released photo confirms the participation of DeLusie and Barrera in the sequel, bringing the Russo parents back to the plot. The only original member of the Russo family missing from the photo is Max, played by Jake T. Austin, whose return has not yet been confirmed.
While Gomez and Henrie had already signed on to return, the exact roles of DeLuise and Barrera in the new series are still unclear. They may appear as regular characters or in guest roles, similar to Gomez’s role. The main focus of the series appears to be on Justin, who, according to the synopsis, leaves his wizard ways behind to become a family man, until an incident at WizTech leads him to rediscover his roots.
Although the return of some characters remains uncertain, fans can certainly expect to see the hilarious Russo parents now as grandparents in the much-anticipated sequel to “Wizards of Waverly Place.”
